How it is paid
Equity, not a retainer.
A few hours a week inside your team, paid in advisory shares rather than a monthly retainer: usually 0.5% to 5%, case by case, with vesting agreed per company. If you also need capital, an angel cheque of up to $25K can come with it. Every engagement starts with a two-week working trial, before any paper.

What is the difference between a Chief of Staff and a COO?
A COO owns operations. A Chief of Staff works for the founder across everything: priorities, people, projects and communication. At pre-seed I often do some of both.
Is a fractional Chief of Staff worth it this early?
When the founder is the bottleneck, yes. A few hours a week of structure usually gives back more founder hours than it takes.
